Vancity Rapid Championship for 2023

Come watch the top players in Vancouver from 2023 battle it out to see who will become the second Vancity Rapid champion!

Date: December 3, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. - 06:00 p.m. PDT

Venue: Life Building, Room 2302 at UBC

6138 Student Union Blvd, Vancouver

All-day paid parking available onsite.

Rounds: 4 rounds Single Elimination format

The round of 16 and quarterfinals will be two games of 10+5, with alternating colours. Ties are broken by bidding Armageddon Blitz (opens new window).

The semi-finals, finals, and the 3rd place match will be two games of 15+10, with alternating colours. Ties are broken by bidding Armageddon Blitz (opens new window).

The higher rated player in the match will play black first.

Round of 16 at 10:00 a.m.
Quarterfinals at 11:15 a.m.
Lunch Break + Casual chess for spectators
1+1 bullet side event for eliminated players and spectators begins at 01:00 p.m.
Semi-finals at 01:30 p.m.
Finals & 3rd place match at 04:30 p.m.
Closing ceremony as soon as all matches are finished (~06:00 p.m.)

Time format: Round of 16 and quarterfinals 10 min + 5 sec/move increment. Semi-finals, finals, & 3rd place match 15 min + 10 sec/move increment

Prizes:

1st - $350 + plaque + name permanently on the Vancity Knight

2nd - $250

3rd - $150

4th - $100

5th - 8th - $50

All players - Free entry to any future Vancity Chess tournament

Bullet Side Event

We will hold a 1+1 bullet side event for all spectators and eliminated players starting at 01:00 p.m. Players will play on their own devices (phone or laptop) on Lichess, not over the board.

Rounds: 6 rounds Swiss format

Time format: 1 min + 1 sec/move increment

Prizes:

1st - $100 + free entry to any future Vancity Chess tournament

2nd - $75 + free entry to any future Vancity Chess tournament

3rd - $50 + free entry to any future Vancity Chess tournament

Byes

No byes may be requested for this championship

Playing Area

No food in the playing area
Silence is required in the playing area while games are in progress
All electronics capable of making noise, communicating, or playing chess must be powered fully off while playing

Photo & Video

Vancity Chess may film certain games throughout the event. We always ask players involved for their permission.
Photos by spectators are allowed for the first 5 minutes of each round, but please be discrete and respectful to not disturb players
